10 Animated Shorts Advance in 2013 Oscar® Race

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 animated short films will advance in the voting process for the 86th Academy Awards®. Fifty-six pictures had originally qualified in the category.

The 10 films are listed below in alphabetical order by title, with their production companies:

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will explore cinema’s roots in stage magic and sleight of hand and show how visual deception drove the development of movie special effects, on Wednesday, November 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. “Like Magic” will examine how some of the techniques used in the earliest “trick films,” such as forced perspective, cuts, dissolves and multiple exposures are still used by filmmakers in the digital age.

 Channing Tatum and The Academy today launched the “Team Oscar” college search on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” along with this year’s Oscars host, Ellen DeGeneres, by inviting the next generation of filmmakers to vie for an opportunity to appear onstage during the live Oscar broadcast. Winners will deliver Oscar statuettes to celebrity presenters at the Academy Awards® on Oscar Sunday, March 2, 2014, live on ABC.

 The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences received separate $10 million gifts from Jeffrey Katzenberg and Steven Spielberg for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. In recognition of these gifts, the two main galleries on the lobby floor of the Academy Museum will be named for Katzenberg and Spielberg – The Marilyn and Jeffrey Katzenberg Gallery and The Spielberg Family Gallery.

The Academy returns to 1913 with films from a century ago.

Official Screen Credits Forms Due December 2 For 2013 Oscars®

For a feature film to be considered for the 2013 Awards, the film’s distributor or producer must deliver an OSC form and legal billing to the Academy’s 8949 Wilshire Boulevard office by 5 p.m. PT on December 2.  If a feature film is released in Los Angeles County in 2013 and the completed OSC form and billing are not delivered by the deadline, the film will be ineligible for Academy Awards in any year.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrates animator Richard Williams with the first public screening of the original version of his film “The Thief and the Cobbler” on Tuesday, December 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Williams, who worked on the now legendary feature for  25 years, will be on hand to introduce the newly reconstructed original workprint from 1992.
